Poverty is not merely a monetary threshold. It has many distinct dimensions that affect people far more deeply than its financial implications suggest. Sometimes, it means having to choose who among your loved ones gets to live. At other times, it involves the loss of livelihoods or the total loss of everything due to natural disasters; it manifests as domestic violence or the marriage of women for money; as the inability to buy school supplies or toys for one’s child due to unemployment and a lack of funds; as social exclusion, a lack of access to resources, or deprivation of basic public services; as inequality of opportunity; or as the indifference, insults, rudeness, belittling of emotions, and humiliation one faces when seeking help.
